The ASA upheld a complaint against the Abbey National Bank for misleading. The bank suggested that no other bank offered a 12 month free overdraft with its advert showing a bank manager and the caption "Leave him. He's not worth it." The advert claimed that no other banks would match their offer for customers transfering overdrafts to the Abbey National.
It was found that this claim could not be substantiated and that other banks offered a similar bonus to new accounts, some offered zero interest overdrafts for more than a year.
